With 1,048 lakes, Otter Tail County has the most lakes of any county in the US. Otter Tail Lake is the largest lake in the county at 13,722 acres. The prominent deciduous tree line on the shore tends to keep near-shore waters calm. It is has excellent water clarity and a maximum depth of 120 feet—perfect for walleye, northern, perch, and rock bass. Otter Tail is also a great icefishing lake. It is part of the Otter Tail River Chain of Lakes—upstream are the 4,700-acre Big Pine, Little Pine, and the 5,300 acre Rush Lake. Downstream are East Lost, West Lost, and Deer lakes.
Dead Lake is a big one at 7,900 acres. It sits north of Otter Tail and Walker lakes and connects to them via the Dead River. The majority of the shoreline is undeveloped and, contrary to its name, it carries a reputation as one of the best fishing lakes in Otter Tail County with walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill in abundance.
Pelican Lake, near Pelican Rapids, is a 4,000 acre lake managed for walleye, northern pike, and bluegill. Lake Lida is a 5,600 acre lake located five miles south of Pelican Rapids. Cabins line the lakeshore, offering a good chance to snatch one up when it becomes available. Star Lake is lined with agricultural lands and cabins. The 4,700 acre lake features bulrushes and wild rice and offers good fishing. West Battle Lake covers 5,600 acre of water and features over 14 miles of shoreline. It is 112 feet deep and offers great clarity at over 15 feet.
